With no end in sight for the government shutdown, DC is taking steps to help protect its residents who are furloughed federal workers.

Mayor Muriel Bowser says she’s asking the DC Council for a bill for the city to provide unemployment benefits to federal workers required to work without pay, even though the feds say the city can’t do that. She said the city is also providing $2 million in food stamps for fed workers and contractors.

Sam Ford takes a look at the plan the mayor announced Tuesday afternoon.
