WASHINGTON (ABC7) — He started working at the HalfSmoke restaurant near Howard University as a dishwasher four years ago, his wife said. Last week, Kevin Redd, 32, was the manager who locked up the store and took a bus to the Minnesota Avenue Metro Station and set off on foot for home.
He never made it. Police say he was found shot to death in an alley blocks from his home and it has left his family devastated.
Redd and his wife, Arronna had been sweethearts since high school. They had three children, ages 12 to 5, and she's eight months pregnant with their fourth child on the way.
“Everything turned black. I didn’t think it was real,” said Arronna Redd, describing when MPD detectives came to her door with the news. “I thought that it was just fake for a second until I looked around and they were still standing there. I just couldn’t do anything. I just fell down to the ground.”
“It’s sick,” said her 11-year-old son, Kevin Redd Jr.
He stood near a basketball goal he said his dad put up for him.
“I’m heartbroken,” said Kevin Jr., “ because every day he would come out and play basketball with me. Now I don’t really have nobody to play basketball with.”
What happened? Police have little to say.
“Right now, we don’t have any details we can share publicly. If that should change, we’ll definitely do so,” said MPD Commander Leslie Parsons of D.C. Homicide.
Arronna Redd said police told her Kevin Sr. was shot multiple times. She said even though they told her he was not robbed, she believes it must have started as an attempted robbery.
“I just want them to know that they just destroyed our family,” she said.
She talked of her husband in affectionate terms.
“Kevin worked at a restaurant and wouldn’t eat until he came home and ate whatever I cooked. Whatever I bought, that’s what he wore,” she said.
“Somebody knows something. Just help us out so we can get some kind of peace," she added.
His coworkers at Half Smoke set up a Gofundme account to help with his funeral expenses. His wife said she totally approves of the effort.
