WASHINGTON (ABC7) — DC Councilmember Charles Allen says he will introduce a bill next week to increase transparency in publicly funded charter schools.
After Cesar Chavez Public Charter School closed two of its three campuses recently, teachers, parents, and students found out about it in the news media or by email.
Allen’s bill would require charter schools to comply with Freedom of Information and open meetings laws that apply to DCPS schools.
"Charter school operators are not a secret society, they are a public school, and they should be public about what they're doing," said DC Councilmember Mary Cheh.
