The discovery of a city employee using department data to commit identity fraud has prompted a review of District Government Agency computer systems.

This led to an urgent warning from the DC Auditor, Kathy Patterson.

Patterson informed the Mayor and City Council that the District government's computer systems are vulnerable to hackers. She maintains the private data of some million people is within reach of hackers. Patterson says they could exploit this information for identity theft and fraud. We are talking about social security numbers, credit card and financial information.

Patterson says the city must take action to secure this information. She is urging the city to designate an entity or individual to oversee cyber security to take the steps to make sure everything possible is done to protect sensitive information.
