WASHINGTON (WJLA) — You may not believe your eyes, but there are fresh cherry blossoms popping up along the National Mall.
The blooms on the Autumn Flowering Higan Cherry trees seem like an out-of-season surprise, but the tree is actually famous for the ability to produce the light pink flowers in November and December.
The sporadic fall bloom doesn't produce as many blossoms as we see during the late March and early April Cherry Blossom Festival, but it is a treat.
"This particular variety is designed, the species blooms early, and the best thing is they will bloom twice," National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst says. "So, they’ll still bloom again in the spring. Just because they’re blooming now, doesn’t mean we won’t see them again.”
