Boy, 12, struck, killed by van while walking on sidewalk in Maryland; man charged
ARNOLD, Md. (WJLA) —
A 12-year-old boy was hit and killed by a van while he was walking with his mother and brother along a sidewalk Sunday in Anne Arundel County.
Matthew Murphy was taken to Johns Hopkins Children's Center where he died from his injuries. Police said the driver of the van, Michael Blair Gauthier, 37, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center. He also underwent a toxicology screening.
Investigators said Gauthier faces charges of criminally negligent manslaughter, grossly negligent manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance. Police said more charges are possible based on the toxicology results.
According to police, Gauthier was driving a work van along Bay Green Drive when he drove off the road and hit Murphy. The van then hit a tree after running off the road.
The incident occurred on Andrew Hill Road and Bay Green Drive. Authorities said an initial cause of the accident reportedly was the result of reckless driving and "failing to stay in a single lane."
