A Frederick County middle school was evacuated Friday morning due to fumes in the building and five students, one staff member were taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services (DFRS) said another seven students and one staff member were evaluated on scene for minor symptoms, who refused to go to Frederick Health Hospital for further evaluation.

According to officials with the Ballenger Creek Middle School, an unknown irritant was released in the school and students and staff were asked to evacuate.

Frederick County (MD) Fire & Rescue crews responded and cleared the school to be safe so students could return.

As of 11:40 a.m., all students are allowed to return inside the building.

Officials say the school is still inaccessible to parents -- If a parent or guardian wishes to reunify with their student before the end of the school day, school officials will send the process once the campus is accessible.

FCSO said once they identify a suspect(s), criminal charges may follow.
