An autopsy has confirmed that a Columbia woman who was found dead in her backyard last week was mauled to death by her newly adopted pit bull, police say.

Robin Conway’s death was ruled “accidental,” and police say her dog killed her. After the dog was euthanized, a necropsy found no abnormalities in the dog. It was not rabid and had no medical issues, police say.

Her husband found Conway dead in her backyard at about 7:20 p.m. Monday, September 3, Labor Day. Her pit bull was standing over her, according to a statement from Howard County police.

He tied the dog to a fence post and called 911. Arriving officers found the dog to be aggressive, barking and lunging on the leash. Animal control officers subdued the dog and later euthanized it.

Conway’s sister, Susan Eve LeClair, told ABC7 that Conway loved animals and had adopted the dog from an out-of-state shelter about two weeks before the attack.
