Authorities say a U.S. Park Police officer was taken to the hospital after he was accidentally shot while executing a search warrant in Northwest D.C. Wednesday morning.

D.C. Police said the officer was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center after he was shot in the lower extremities. Park Police said the incident happened because "a Park Police Officer’s firearm was unintentionally discharged."

The incident took place around 7 a.m. at a home at 4919 Kansas Avenue, NW, police said.

Police say the officer is currently at the hospital in stable condition.

There was a large police presence on the scene of the shooting. Kansas Avenue was blocked off because of the investigation but has since reopened.
