83-year-old woman dies after being hit by her own car at Maryland church, police say
BOYDS, Md. (ABC7) — An 83-year-old woman is dead after her SUV rolled backward, hitting her in a church parking lot.
Around 8:48 a.m. Sunday, Montgomery County Police were dispatched to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church located at 19620 White Ground Road in the tiny town of Boyds. Officers found Kathleen Howard on the gray gravel with life-threatening injuries. Medics took the senior citizen to an area hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.
"She left the, ugh, trunk or the door, got out of the car and vehicle was still in reverse and it hit her," an officer could be heard telling dispatchers in scanner audio reviewed by ABC7. "She’s going to need a transport and a medic."
Investigators have determined Howard's 2006 Lexus RX 330 rolled backward. However, they are continuing to review evidence to determine if the rollover was due to human or mechanical error. A lack of eyewitnesses is making that job more difficult.
Howard had lived in a townhome along Clovercrest Circle in Olney since 1981. Little more is currently known about the 83-year-old woman, including if she was a parishioner at St. Mark's or just happened to be stopping by.
On Monday, the front door of the small wooden church was locked. It's parking lot and neighboring cemetery sat quiet and empty.
