West Virginia mom accused of shooting daughters, killing her 8-year-old
GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. (ABC7) —
An 8-year-old West Virginia girl has died and her 11-year-old sister is injured after their mother shot both of them Thursday afternoon.
At 4:08 p.m., Sergeant W. R. Garrett of the Martinsburg Detachment responded to the Gerrardstown area of Berkeley County, West Virginia, for a report of a child who arrived at a local residence with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Sergeant Garrett met with the caller who advised an 11-year old girl arrived at her residence and stated her mother, 46-year-old Julie Orellana, had shot her in the leg.
Sergeant Garrett spoke to the 11-year-old girl and was advised her 8-year-old sister was still at her mother's residence.
During this time, Orellana's vehicle was located and abandoned a short distance from her residence.
Sergeant J.D. Burkhart responded to the residence and discovered the 8-year-old girl was dead on the living room floor from multiple wounds.
Officers from different agencies within the surrounding area arrived and an extensive search was conducted.
At 8:00 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, Orellana was found in the woods in the area where the search was being conducted. Orellana was in possession of a handgun.
She was taken into custody without incident.
The 8-year-old girl is being transported to the West Virginia State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy to be performed. The 11-year-old is expected recover and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
This incident is still under active investigation at this time.
