8 hospitalized after deck collapses in mass casualty incident in Ellicott City
ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (ABC7) —
Eight people were hospitalized after a deck collapsed Saturday in Ellicott City.
About 20 people were on the 20-by-40-foot deck in the 4900 block of Bonnie Branch Road when it fell approximately 12 feet to the ground shortly after 4:30 p.m., a Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson said.
Of the eight hospitalized, three were taken to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and five were taken to a local hospital. None had life-threatening injuries, according to the spokesperson.
At least one of the eight hospitalized patients was put on a stretcher before they were taken to a local hospital.
The incident was declared by HCDFRS as a mass casualty incident – which led to additional firefighters, paramedics and equipment automatically being routed to the scene – because of the number of reported victims when calls were made to first responders. According to HCDFRS, a mass casualty incident means the number of patients exceeds what can be managed by first arriving resources.
