A six-month-old infant was rescued by firefighters during an apartment fire early Thursday morning in Alexandria, Virginia. The fire also left 19 people displaced, according to the Red Cross.

The child was taken to the hospital for observation, according to fire officials. It's unknown at this moment if anyone else was inside the unit with the child at the time of the fire.

Firefighters arrived to the apartment building and spotted smoke from a third-floor apartment. Firefighters entered the apartment and saw the fire in the kitchen and also found the infant inside the unit.

The child was rescued from the apartment by firefighters and taken to paramedics outside.

Officials say the fire occurred in the 900 block of N. Patrick Street, and report three apartment units are condemned, one from fire and two from water.
