ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (ABC7) - A 4-year-old boy shot and killed himself Monday afternoon with a gun he found at a child care provider’s home in Orange County, which is also the home of a Stafford County Sheriff’s recruit.
The Stafford Sheriff's recruit was not at home at the time of the shooting and the gun was not a service weapon, according to a statement released by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Orange County deputies responded to a 911 call at the home off Mine Run Road in Orange County at about 12:45 p.m. Monday.
Despite life-saving efforts by deputies, rescue personnel, and investigators, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying the recruit has been employed since December 2016 and is enrolled at the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office statement, an autopsy will be performed but no further information will be released until the investigation is completed.
