A 2-year-old boy was determined to be injured Sunday in D.C., but not from a gunshot wound as a hospital previously said.

D.C. police said they received a call from a hospital Sunday afternoon about a boy who was brought in with a gunshot wound to the leg before it was later determined by that evening that he had not been shot.

The supposed shooting took place just before 4 p.m. at a playground area of an apartment complex in the 1100 block of K Street, SE, according to police.

Even when it was believed the boy had been shot, police said the boy was expected to be OK as he was conscious and breathing.

Police are now investigating what actually led to the child’s injuries. Family and child services have been cleared, but it is not clear what will happen to the toddler, ABC7’s Victoria Sanchez reports.

Police searched an apartment at 1131 K Street following the incident. Sanchez said multiple officers with gloves were going in and out of the building and that it appeared that photos were being taken.
