2 dead after car and delivery truck crash in Silver Spring, police say

Two people are dead and another person has critical injuries after a delivery truck struck a car in Silver Spring early Saturday morning.

Montgomery County police said a 2018 Freightliner MT45, a Peapod delivery truck, was traveling southbound on New Hampshire Avenue when it struck a 1997 Toyota Corolla traveling northbound that was in the process of making a left turn onto Northampton Drive around 5:43 a.m.

Both the male driver, Ismael Melchor Salazar, 39, and female passenger, Maribel Zelaya de Reyes, 41, of the Toyota Corolla died in the crash, police said. Salazar was pronounced dead at the scene and de Reyes was pronounced dead at the hospital. Both were from Hyattsville.

A second passenger of the Corolla, another man, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Freightliner, James Richard Bailey Jr., was not injured in the crash.
