Used candles, flowers and more are surrounding the 2400 block of Kent Village Drive where Amer Miller was shot and killed.

“To hear that he passed, words can’t even explain. I was with him every day,” Miller’s former teammate Shemarri Miles said.

Police said Davion Ballinger shot the 17-year-old after robbing him just after midnight on Saturday.

Detectives have not released details about the item that was stolen.

“Just trying to fight back tears, just talking about it,” Miles said.

Miller recently graduated high school and he planned on running track for Mount St. Mary’s University.

“We was all ready for the next chapter,” Miles said.

Miller was a popular athlete at Fairmont Heights High School, where he was known for his star power and winning personality.

He was also well-known at Duval High School, before he transferred to Fairmont.

“He used to really motivate me to actually get up for track meets, (because) he was our leader,” Miles said.

“My heart is breaking and we all will miss this young man who had so much promise,” Miller’s former teacher Mario Williams said.

Friends are planning a celebration of life for Amer on Aug. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Kentland Recreation Center.
