WASHINGTON (WJLA) – Thanks to 7 On Your Side and a generous pest management company, an elderly D.C. woman’s home is no longer a wreck and infested with bed bugs.

Virginia McLaurin, 106, couldn’t be happier these days.

“Just as happy as a bug in a rug,” she said.

Ironically, it was bed bugs that were bugging McLaurin. They had infested her 13th Street apartment in Northwest. The infestation was so bad when 7 On Your Side first met McLaurin in mid-December, the bugs were even crawling on her.

After we aired our first story on McLaurin just days before Christmas, Josh Kramer from Innovative Pest Management came forward and offered to exterminate her apartment. On Wednesday, 7 On Your Side returned to McLaurin’s home with Kramer to see the transformation.

“It was the holidays, we saw the news story that [7 On Your Side] did,” Kramer said. “It was almost an impulsive decision, and it was absolutely the right thing to do.”

While Kramer and his crew were working on the apartment after Jan. 1, McLaurin’s landlord, Wexford Property Management, sent crews in to paint the apartment, put new locks on the doors and install new carpeting. They finished the work Wednesday.

Over the weekend, Kramer had a brand-new bed delivered to McLaurin’s apartment.

“I didn’t have a bed, you know,” McLaurin said.

McLaurin is happy with what she calls her “new apartment” and is pleased with her new bed. But she’s most excited about the bed bugs being gone.

“If you want to be lift up and be free, talk to Channel 7—he’s my friend,” she concluded.
