Phife is Living: Celebrating the legacy of Phife and A Tribe Called Quest

PHIFE IS LIVING is a free all day festival finale to Brave New Voice’s annual BNV Conference where hundreds of the most talented youth poets and spoken word artists from around the world are coming to Marvin Gaye Park on Saturday, July 16th to build, compete, and lend a few hundred hands to our neighborhood thanks to Words Beats & Life Inc., The John F. Kennedy Center, and Brave New Voices.

Mazi Mutafa is the Executive Director of Words Beats & Life, a DC born and bred hip-hop nonprofit dedicated to transforming individual lives and whole communities through hip-hop culture. Words Beats & Life hosts an array of events, provides free after-school hip-hop arts classes, creates public art throughout the city, travels the world exchanging hip-hop globally, and publishes the world's firs academic journal in hip-hop. Hip-Hop legend Phife Dog passed away earlier this year and to help celebrate his legacy and the legacy of A Tribe Called Quest, Words Beats & Life is hosting Phife is Living; a free all day festival showcasing the most talented youth poets and spoken word artists from around the world. Mutafa told us more about the festival and how we can build on A Tribe Called Quest's legacy by challenging accepted norms and values.
