The sights are breathtaking as you drive into Arlington.

Dozens of massive American flags can be seen at the largest office buildings across Rosslyn as a tribute to those who lost their lives during September 11, 2001.

The flags also recognize the heroic efforts of countless individuals from fire and police departments who responded and helped support those in need.

Each flag faces the Pentagon.

“When you are so close to something like this that happened to your community, it really is a way of healing, coming together," said Mary-Claire Burick, President for the Rosslyn Business Improvement District. "It really demonstrates so visibly how connected this community is and why we do it year after year, especially this year marking the 20th year anniversary."

This annual tradition started in Rosslyn following the 9/11 attacks.

Burick explained, “I think it really is such a visible reminder of how connected we are and particularly how important it is to come together with everything going on in the state of our world right now."

The flags serve as a reminder of the American spirit immediately felt when the nation was bleeding.

Roger Aberth, General Manager at the Hyatt Centric Arlington, said “for us it has a lot of meaning, we get a lot of families that stay here as they plan to bury their loved ones at Arlington National Cemetery right up the road and having them here to see the flags is really important."

Jennifer Burns, Senior, Vice President of Property Management and Operations at Monday Properties, stated “as we approach the anniversary, I have been here for 13 years and we continue to commemorate 9/11 through the Flags across Rosslyn."

Burns, who said all of Monday Properties ten buildings will continue to participate. "Personally and professionally, it is very meaningful for us to participate. My husband is a first responder and this day holds special meaning for my family. It’s really important for us to participate."

For the best view, many choose to view Flags across Rosslyn while visiting the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial or from the Key Bridge over the Potomac.
