First 'The Birth of a Nation' trailer released online

Days after making a splash at CinemaCon, the first trailer for the highly-anticipated slavery-era drama "The Birth of a Nation" was released online Friday.

"Nat Turner, a former slave in America, leads a liberation movement in 1831 to free African-Americans in Virginia that results in a violent retaliation from whites," according to the film's IMDB page.

The film is rated R for "disturbing violent content and some brief nudity."

The first trailer doesn't take long to tease its disturbing imagery: a shadowy execution, a black girl being led by a white child by noose and three white men surrounding a black woman.

The film is directed by and stars Nate Parker, as Nat Turner, who leads a cast that includesArmie Hammer,Jackie Earle Haley and Gabrielle Union.

The film is scheduled for a Oct. 7, 2016 release.
