Margot Robbie will reprise her “Suicide Squad” role of Harley Quinn in 2020, Warner Bros. announced Monday, setting a release date for a long-promised spin-off film featuring a team of female superheroes.

“Birds of Prey,” set for a Feb. 7, 2020 release, will be directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodson. According to Variety, Robbie’s Quinn will lead a team that includes Black Canary, the Huntress, and Gotham cop Renee Montoya.

No additional casting announcements have been made, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jurnee Smolett-Bell and Janelle Monae are under consideration to play Black Canary. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Cristin Milioti are reportedly among those being tested opposite Robbie for the Huntress role.

The film is based on a number of DC Comics series that have united various Batman-adjacent female characters for their own adventures. Originally teaming up Black Canary and then-former Batgirl Barbara Gordon, the Birds of Prey books have looped in Huntress and more than a dozen other characters over the last 22 years.

The property was adapted into a very short-lived WB series in 2002 that starred Ashley Scott, Dina Meyer, Rachel Skarsten, and Shemar Moore. It has not aged well.

The February 2020 release date lines up “Birds of Prey” to hit theaters a week before the newly-rescheduled 25th James Bond film and three months after DC’s “Wonder Woman” sequel. It will also follow an October 2019 Joker solo film starring Joaquin Phoenix.
