Prince William County police arrested an Uber driver Wednesday for allegedly groping a 24-year-old female passenger over her clothing.

Mengistu Asfaw, 58, of Annandale, was charged with misdemeanor sexual battery.

On July 12 at approximately 3:15 a.m., Asfaw picked up the victim and her acquaintance in the Clarendon section of Arlington after they requested a ride using the Uber phone application. The driver took the victim and the other passenger to York Drive in Woodbridge, where he exited the vehicle, approached the victim and touched her inappropriately, according to police. The victim’s acquaintance did not see the encounter.

After an investigation, police identified the Uber driver as Asfaw. Detectives secured a warrant for his arrest and took him into custody on Aug. 5.

Asfaw is expected to appear in court on Sept. 9.
