Crime scene tape surrounded the 1200 block of I Street Southeast, while police investigated 16-year-old Breyona McMillian’s murder.

She was gunned down, just before noon, outside the Potomac Gardens Apartment Complex; where she was living.

“I took her phone out of her back pocket, I seen her. She wasn’t breathing,” said her cousin Quashawn. “I couldn’t do nothing but cry. That’s it. Wish she could come back with us one more time.”

Investigators have not revealed a motive in the case, leaving neighbors with lots of questions.

“Somebody knew somebody and so when you something like that, it’s best to allow the community to identify those individuals and to stand up to the loss of life,” said Tim Murphy.

“Whole Gardens going to miss her.“It’s crazy, she died the day after Thanksgiving. I mean I love her,” said Quashawn.

On Friday night, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted that she is "sickened by today's violence."

A $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
