CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md (ABC7) — Prince George's Police Department are on the scene of a police-involved shooting in Capitol Heights.
According to police, officers were "conducting a surveillance operation" in the area,on 27-year-old Terrence Turbo Franklin, who is a "suspect in several violent crimes."
Police say preliminaryit's believed that shortly before 10 p.m. officers spotted Franklin driving in the area of Central Avenue and Shady Glen Drive and made an attempt to stop him.
"Officers in marked cruisers activated their lights and attempted to stop Franklin who had pulled over onto Shady Glen Drive. He sped away from the officers and jumped out of his car a short distance away on Shady Glen Terrace," Prince George's Police Department stated in a press release.
A foot pursuit followed, according to police, who say Franklin turned several yards later and pointed a gun towards them.
An officer shot at Franklin, striking him in the arm.
Thedriver sped off, stopped shortly after, and fled the scene on foot while armed with a gun, according to police.
The Prince George's Police Department say the officers pursued after the suspect on foot and once in close reach the suspect "turned and pointed a gun at the officers."
As the officer approaches the suspect it is believed that a weapon was pulled on the suspect, shooting him in his arm.
At this point, officialsdo not believe the suspect's injuries are life-threating.
Police say the suspect'shandgun was recovered at the scene.
No officers were injured during this incident, officials confirm.
As standard procedure, the unidentified officer who opened fire is now on administrative leave.
