Man arrested for vandalizing police cruisers, assaulting officers in Montgomery County

A Silver Spring man is facing multiple charges after he vandalized two Montgomery County police cruisers and assaulted three officers in Gaithersburg Monday.

According to police, an off-duty officer was notified by a witness that a man was using a rock to break the passenger side window out of a MCPD cruiser near the 9800 block of Washington Boulevard at around 3:30 p.m. on June 18.

Witnesses told police the man had walked to a shopping center nearby after the incident occurred.

The off-duty officer found the man, later identified as 24-year-old Hector A. Pacheco, in a department store. When the officer identified himself, Pacheco reportedly fled the scene and tried to run out of the store.

Police say on-duty officers, who had arrived to help the off-duty officer, located Pacheco at the entrance of the department store and tried to arrest him.

When the officers attempted to take Pacheco into custody, police say he resisted and assaulted the three on-duty officers before they were able to arrest him.

The officers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene following the incident.

While in custody, police determined Pacheco was the same person who had vandalized another police vehicle on June 6 in the 15700 block of Mahogany Circle. This incident was recorded on home video surveillance, which was released to the public on June 7.

Watch the video below:

Pacheco has been charged with two counts of destruction of property, resisting arrest and three counts of second-degree assault.

He was released from custody after posting a $5,000 bond.
