A 24-year-old man is accused of stabbing his family's dog, assaulting a person, and destroying a TV, coffee maker, and other items inside of a home in Laurel, Maryland.

Omar Beniah-Jovan Gertman faces charges of felony animal cruelty, second-degree assault, and malicious destruction of property, according to Howard County Police.

On June 12, Gertman allegedly stabbed the dog and damaged items inside the home located in the 9600 block of Covered Wagon Drive. He left the residence after the incident.

Investigators say the Yorkshire Terrier is expected to survive its injuries after it was "disemboweled," and it was unknown at the time if the dog would live.

Gertman was later arrested at a local hotel.
