SILVER SPRING, Md. (ABC7) — A man shot by a police officer Monday after holding his 3-year-old son inside a Silver Spring home during a domestic-violence related barricade has now died, Montgomery County Police report.
The man, John Carlos Natera-Perez, was initially taken to a hospital in "grave condition" where he has remained since the shooting.
Authorities say the boy was rescued and uninjured during the incident.
Montgomery County Police say Perez was armed with a knife when he arrived to his ex-girlfriend's house in the 2800 block of Mozart Drive.
The woman, her boyfriend, and 3-year-old son (who she shares with Perez) were inside the residence.
According to investigators, the woman and man left the home "in fear for their safety," but Perez held the boy inside the residence with him.
Officers arrived to the scene and attempted to get Perez to exit the home with the boy, but he refused.
Perez then used furniture to barricade doors and windows in the home, and reportedly wrote on the windows using what appeared to be "blood from his fingers."
Authorities say Perez lit an "object" on fire and threw it out of the window from a second-floor window, where the boy was apparently located.
According to police, screams from the boy were heard coming from the second-floor, and officers then entered the home. An officer found Perez and shot him.
