Police: 2nd child dies after shot by mother in Tysons Corner
TYSONS, Va. (ABC7) - A second child has died after they were shot by their mother on Sunday, Aug. 5 in Tysons Corner, authorities said.
Fairfax County Police say 33-year-old Veronica Youngblood, of McLean, was arrested in Loudoun County after the shooting and charged with murder.
Officers say they responded to an apartment in the 1500 block of Lincoln Circle around 10:15 p.m. and found the children with gunshot wounds. The 5-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other child was initially taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
ABC7's Tim Barber reported Wednesday that court documents showed Youngblood confessed to shooting and made a phone call between the incident and her arrest at an acquaintance's home.
Court documents also showed there was tension between Youngblood and the father of her 5-year-old daughter.
Youngblood appeared at her first court hearing by video at 9 a.m. at the General District Court of Fairfax on Tuesday. She told the judge she does not want counsel and was assigned to a public defender.
Her next appearance is scheduled for Oct. 18 at 1:30 p.m.
