WASHINGTON (AP/WJLA) - District of Columbia police said a 13-year-old boy died after being shot in the city's Northeast; the shooting apparently occurred while the boy was playing with a loaded handgun along with his best friend.

Police said Wednesday that they responded to a call about shots fired around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 1400 block of Downing Street. There they found Tyrin Caldwell conscious and breathing with a gunshot wound.

The teen later died at a hospital. Metro police said a medical examiner would determine the exact cause and manner of the teen's death.

Police said they had taken the other boy involved in the incident into custody. But Caldwell's father told ABC 7 News that he does not want the other boy, his son's best friend, to face charges, saying the shooting was an accident.
