An officer has died after being shot in his patrol car late Thursday night in a double shooting in Southeast Washington.

Twenty-nine-year-old Evan Williams was an on-duty special police officer. Williams was taken to a local hospital where he later died, according to police. Another man was also shot, and sustained a non-life-threatening injury.

An initial investigation determined that both men were shot during the same incident, police say.

Williams, who is not believed to have been the "intended target," was shot while driving along Atlantic Avenue Street, SE heading back to his job site.

He drove himself to an area fire station on First and Atlantic Avenue where he exited the car and collapsed.

Police say the shooting happened in the 4000 block of Third Street, SE.

Metropolitan Police are asking anyone with information on this case to call 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information can be submitted to the department's TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.
