Opinion: Our country cannot afford single-payer healthcare
Many Democrats are hitching their wagon to a concept that they’re calling “Medicare for All” or single-payer healthcare run by the federal government.
Senator Bernie Sanders famously made his plan for single-payer health care a pillar of his presidential bid in 2016.
Since then, we’ve seen this idea supported by now former President Barack Obama, and over half of the house Democrat Caucus has endorsed a bill that would make single-payer a reality.
This socialized healthcare system eliminates patient choice and costs trillions of dollars that our country does not have.
According to the Urban Institute, this plan would cost a whopping 32 trillion dollars.
In a study done by the Mercatus Center, it was concluded that even if Congress doubled what the federal government collects in taxes, it still would not be enough to pay for Medicare for All.
That means that paying for this utopian idea would have to be achieved by the largest tax increase in modern American history.
That is absolutely unacceptable – both sides of the aisle need to come together and address the problems of healthcare reform with patient-centered solutions and not with socialist spending.
Here’s the bottom line: we can all agree that our healthcare system is in dire need of reform. However, the grave consequences of adopting single-payer are just too great. The massive tax hikes and increased deficit spending alone make this step towards socialism one that our country cannot afford to take.
