WASHINGTON (7News) — As school buildings welcome back students at D.C. Public Schools, some community leaders are raising concerns about whether those buildings will be ready.
A Twitter video from Ward 8 ANC Salim Adofo shows several issues in the cafeteria at Hart Middle School.
"We were working with Stay D.C. program in partnership with the attorney general and other community organizations," said Adofo. "We get over there and we see that [the A/C is] leaking. The ceiling is falling apart. It had garbage cans there to catch the water. I immediately said this is definitely not safe for us to use right now, but it's also not good for the students as well as the staff and educators as well."
In addition to those issues, Ward 8 State Board of Education Representative Dr. Carlene Reid, pointed out other issues.
She said there were broken windows at the school.
She also said the public address system at Hendley Elementary School was not working.
"They're in a community that has some community violence issues where they need to be able to make a quick call to do a shelter in place. That's not in place right now," she said.
That led 7News On Your Side to start asking DCPS if school buildings would be ready and safe for when students return and not just from a COVID-19 standpoint.
A spokesman for DCPS said to contact the Department of General Services, the agency that maintains the buildings.
In a statement to 7News On Your Side, DGS Director Keith Anderson said the following:
“The Department of General Services (DGS) implemented and installed a special capital project this past year to upgrade HVAC filters at D.C. Public School (DCPS) locations across the District. This is an important part of Mayor Bowser’s strategy to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. In addition to upgraded filters, the installation of air scrubbers and new sensors will now allow DGS to monitor any differences in air quality. This award-wining program adds an extra layer of protection and is in place across the school system.
“The standard annual HVAC maintenance program is currently underway, and we are excited to work with DCPS for a return to a healthy, in-person experience. As a result of heightened global demand on HVAC supply chains due to the pandemic, DGS has initiated a contingency plan for some schools with air conditioning component issues that require replacement. Temporary spot coolers and/or window units are being installed for impacted schools. DGS has been working hard with DCPS to ensure the safest return to the District’s public learning facilities and we will be monitoring these facilities closely to ensure an environmentally safe school year.
"The public address system at Hendley Elementary School, and air conditioning malfunctioning and broken windows at Hart Middle School are being addressed under the DGS annual summer maintenance of DCPS locations. These repairs are estimated to be completed by the end of September."
"We want to bring parents and students back, but if it's not an environment conducive to learning, it sends a not so positive message to students," said Reid.
