Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is celebrating and giving thanks to the essential workers within the school system and the City of Alexandria all week!
The week-long annual event will show appreciation to the essential workers who "educate, protect and keep us healthy and safe," the school system said.
During an event on Tuesday at Patrick Henry K-8 School, students and community leaders came together to honor local essential workers who helped them along the way. The event included the local sheriff's office, police, firefighters and even workers from the Inova healthcare system.
As part of the celebration, younger students got the opportunity to tour fire trucks, sheriff vehicles and school buses.
ACPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt, Patrick Henry K-8 School Principal Dr. Ingrid Bynum, ACPS School Board members and student representatives, Alexandria City Council members, Life Enrichment Center President Kevin Turpin and representatives from the Alexandria PTA Council were also in attendance.
Principal Bynum also extended an invitation of recognition to essential workers who support elementary school students and parents/guardians who are also essential workers.
This comes after the City of Alexandria issued a proclamation in 2022 to designate the third week of March to celebrate the city’s essential workers.
The city's essential workers appreciation week continues through March 19, according to the school system's website. To learn more about the initiative or the next events coming up, click here.
