Memorial Day Weekend weather forecast for DC and the beaches

Bethany Beach, DE

Memorial Day Weekend lies ahead and many of you have plans to be outside or head to the beaches. This time of year in the DC area and Mid Atlantic is typically a forecast challenge due to the late Spring pattern and this year is no exception.

This week has been rather miserable, with clouds and cool temperatures. Rain and storm chances continue tonight into Thursday, but warmer weather is anticipated as well. Highs should at least reach the mid 70s both Thursday and Friday as an area of low pressure slides overhead and eventually into the Atlantic.

Weekend Forecast for the DC Area

While we’re not expecting a wash-out by any means, there does appear to be a daily threat for thunderstorms. I’ll go ahead and remind you now to download the StormWatch7 App as it will let you know when lightning is near your location or if a severe weather alert has been issued for your area.

Saturday will start off partly sunny with highs close to the 80 degree mark. By the late afternoon and evening a few storms may develop, with the best chance west of DC.

Sunday will feature the highest chance for storms in the immediate DC Metro as a disturbance moves in from the west. High temperatures will again be around 80 degrees and storms appear like they will develop by the early to mid afternoon and continue through the evening hours. A weak front will pass through the area late Monday, again bringing the chance for a few storms with highs still around 80 degrees.

Weekend Forecast for the Delmarva Beaches

The forecast for the beaches is a little more difficult since ocean temperatures are still in the lower 60s. If there is any kind of fetch off the water, temperatures at the beaches could be 10 degrees cooler than forecast. With that being said, currently we are expecting highs in the low 70s each day with the nicest day expected on Saturday.

Sunday and Monday may experience a few late day storms as well as a slight easterly fetch. This may make it a little cool on the beach at times, but the forecast continues to keep temperatures in the lower 70s through Memorial Day. Take it from me.. I’m bringing a sweatshirt just in case. I’d rather be prepared!

Weekend Forecast for Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks

Temperatures will be warmer farther south. Highs should approach the 80 degree mark all weekend in Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks. Saturday should still be the best of the bunch weather-wise, with a higher likelihood for a few afternoon showers and storms Sunday and Monday.
