(AP/WJLA) - Thousands of homes in the D.C. metro area are without power Thursday following Wednesday night's severe thunderstorms.

The damage from the storms caused blown transformers, downed power lines and road closures across the region.

In Fairfax County, a family escaped unharmed after an uprooted tree fell on their home. Fallen trees also damaged homes in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

In the Belle View neighborhood in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County, Mike Lester said Wednesday night's storm was the worst he's seen in his 30 years living there.

"I was asleep and all of the sudden, kaboom!" he described. "I looked outside and it was just raining so hard, and right in the backyard I think I had a lightning bolt hit there and took part of the tree down on the back of my shed."

Meanwhile, Blaise Pugh and his wife Deb are stunned as they look at the damage done to their home. The couple was inside with their two daughters when the storm blew through on Wednesday's night.

The massive tree that sat on this property for 300 years was pulled up by its roots and came crashing down - barely missing their home and 12-year-old daughter's room. She was asleep in her bed.

Authorities say downed trees are slowing traffic in some locations, including the George Washington Parkway between Belle View Boulevard and Morningside Lane.

Now, the task for crews is to clean up -- and restore power.

As of 9:15 a.m. Thursday, the current outage numbers in the D.C. metro area are:
