GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WJLA) - Pepco alone reported more than 40,000 outages on Tuesday night in Montgomery County, and thousands more were affected in Northern Virginia.
Up and down Route 355, traffic signals were out and utility poles were down, snarling the evening commute.
The power is slowly returning for some, but others suffered other impacts from the weather -- one lightning strike came so close to hitting a woman in Germantown who was walking her dog that it still managed to injure her.
"She was out walking her dog with an umbrella, lightning struck nearby, it knocked her to the ground," explains Pete Piringer, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire.
The incident took place near the intersection of Brink and Blunt Roads.
"Her family thought she was dead, they called in an electrocution -- fortunately that wasn't the case, but it was enough to cause her burns and she was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries," says Piringer.
