Wheaton Metro escalators out

UPDATE (7:27 a.m.): Escalator service at Wheaton has been restored, WMATA says.

ORIGINAL STORY: The escalators at the Wheaton Metro station are inoperable this morning due to a mechanical problem.

About 5 a.m., WMATA reported to outages and said shuttle bus service would be running. The station remained open.

The escalators are the longest in the Western Hemisphere each featuring a length of 230 feet with a vertical rise of 115 feet.

It was not immediately known when the escalators would be operating again.
