More Metro riders switching to SmarTrip cards, report says

New figures reveal more Metro riders are switching to SmarTrip cards.

The Washington Examiner reports that since Metro raised the surcharge on paper fare cards to a dollar per trip, more riders are buying{ }SmarTrip cards.

In the first three months since the rate hike, SmarTrip card purchases increased by 27 percent, the Examiner reports.

Paper fare cards reportedly dropped by 17 percent.

The Examiner says SmarTrip cards are now used for 84 percent of all rail trips.
