Metro is dropping the price of SmarTrip cards to $2 effective in October.
The reusable farecards currently cost $10 and come with $5 in fare when purchased. Riders who registered their new cards on WMATA.com also received a $3 rebate.
Starting Oct. 1, customers will still pay $10 for a new card, but it will now come loaded with $8 in metro fare.
WMATA officials say that 90 percent of bus trips and 85 percent of rail trips are paid for using SmarTrip. The agency instituted a surcharge of $1 per ride for people using paper farecards since last July.
