Metro's escalators operated at their most efficient rate in nearly half a decade, a positive bump for one of the most maligned features of the rail system.

Statistics released by WMATA Tuesday indicate that 91.9 percent of escalators were regularly available during the 2nd quarter of 2013. It means that more about 540 of the system's 588 escalators were in service regularly while Metro was open.

The system houses the largest number of escalators of any transit agency in the Western Hemisphere and WMATA has been working to replace or rehabilitate hundreds of the staircases for years.
