A man was killed and a woman was critically injured overnight in a violent crash in Gaithersburg, authorities say.
The crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday near Girard Street and East Diamond Avenue, Montgomery County Police say. Officers first spotted the SUV and tried to pull it over for driving with its high beams on when it sped through a red light.
Officers lost sight of the car, but when they found it, it had left the roadway and hit a utility pole, bus stop, tree and fire hydrant. Both of the people in the car were ejected.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Neither of the victims have been identified.
Montgomery County Police officials say they don't know why the driver of the SUV sped through a red light or how the car crashed.
