(WJLA) - From ABC7's Chopper, you can clearly see the violence of a collision that happened as a car swerved to hit a Maryland Transportation Authority officer sitting in his black cruiser between the east and westbound lanes
"A car for some unknown reason was coming off eastbound span of Bay Bridge, left the roadway, struck our officer car -- sending him across three lanes of traffic...the other operator went airborne," explained Lt. Kevin Ayd.
All lanes of travel were closed in both directions as Medevac helicopters landed and carried the injured motorist and officer to hospitals, and traffic was backed up for miles.
This gas station along Route 50 became an oasis for the stranded.
"It's extremely inconvenient -- we have three little kids that are screaming and crying on the highway, so yeah it's pretty bad," said Lesie Schroeder.
Investigators say that at this point, they have no idea why the driver swerved off the roadway and hit the officer. Fortunately, both are expected to survive.
