Former Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas was busted early Thursday morning in California for having more than a dozen crates of illegal fireworks, TMZ says.

Arenas, who played in Washington for parts of eight seasons, was pulled over at about 2:30 a.m. near Los Angeles after being caught speeding. A bomb squad had to be called in, though, to unload about 20 boxes of illegal fireworks from the pickup truck he was driving.

TMZ says Arenas was arrested and charged with possession of illegal fireworks.

Arenas' had a significant falling out with the Wizards organization in 2010 after it was revealed that he was keeping guns in his locker at the Verizon Center. He also was involved in an incident with then teammate Javaris Crittendon, during which the two threatened each other allegedly over gambling debts.

He spent a month in a halfway house after pleading guilty to gun crimes in the District of Columbia.
