The Nationals' Max Scherzer accepted the Cy Young award for outstanding pitching at the team's home opener on Monday afternoon.

A stress fracture in his hand plagued him during spring training, though Scherzer says it's mostly healed by now.

The Baseball Writers' Association of America chooses a winner from each league every year to receive the award, which is named for one of the most accomplished pitchers in baseball history.

Scherzer also won the award for the American League in 2013, when he pitched for the Detroit Tigers.
