The Washington Capitals have signed forward Troy Brouwer to a contract extension, the team announced Wednesday.

Brouwer, who scored 18 goals and 15 assists while playing in all 82 games for Washington in 2011-12, signed a three-year extension worth $11 million. He also ranked second on the team in blocked shots and played in all 14 of the Capitals' playoff games last season.

"Troy is a physical and versatile power forward who can play both wings and who has averaged close to 20 goals in the past three seasons," Capitals GM George McPhee said. "He is a Stanley Cup winner and a great leader."

The Vancouver, B.C. native was a member of the 2010 Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks and was traded to the Capitals in 2011 for a draft pick. In 320 career games with the Blackhawks and Capitals, Brouwer has 136 points.
