Even Taylor Swift, playoff hockey and the Mother’s Day weekend won’t be immune to long waits on Metro. The system is warning riders to add 30 to 40 minutes to trip times all weekend. That’s to accommodate work on four of the five lines.
Metro ran just fine Friday, but by 10 p.m. the brakes come on.
“The Metro is always closed or tracking,” says Michael Clymo of Fairfax. “It’s just frustrating.”
Repair and improvement will disrupt several lines and close four stations, but the Orange Line will see big-time travel trauma.
East Falls Church, West Falls Church, Dunn Loring and Vienna will all be closed.
“I can’t believe on a Friday night they are closing down at 10 p.m.,” says Ryan Jones.
Jones drove in from Richmond for the Caps game and planned to Metro in and out of the city.
“I parked here, plan on driving back to Richmond once I get done with the game. It’s a 7:30 p.m. game so it won’t be done until after 10 p.m. easily,” he says.
Weekend work on Metro always poses problems, but this weekend boasts a host of hot tickets. Besides the Caps, Taylor Swift will lure thousands of fans to the Verizon Center. Saturday morning, the Komen Global Race for the Cure gets underway.
“As far as I’m concerned you got to take the bus if you’re going,” says Shirley Ambruster of Falls Church.
Austin McFarland rides Metro regularly, often on Saturday and Sunday, but this weekend he will avoid Metro altogether.
“It sounds like I will probably be going to be staying in for the weekend, laying low. I don’t’ want to be out in all that trouble…” he says.
But there are those who are philosophical about all the work on Metro. They just hope once it’s done, they will be in for smoother rides.
The Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church and East Falls Church stations will be closed. Shuttle buses will replace trains between Vienna and Ballston.
Trains will single track between Grosvenor and Twinbrook and between Rhode Island Ave. and Takoma. Trains will operate every 28 minutes.
Trains will single track between Braddock Road and Pentagon City. Trains will operate every 30 minutes.
