Hundreds line up to get Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly's autograph in Gaithersburg

Hundreds line up to get Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly's autograph in Gaithersburg (ABC7)

More than 400 fans lined up through a large store and out the door Wednesday evening to get an autograph from Capitals Stanley Cup hero Devante Smith-Pelly.

The event, held at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Gaithersburg, offered evidence Capitals fever is not going away after the team captured the Stanley Cup last week and then held a massive parade Tuesday.

Dick’s says a total of 426 fans received autographs before the event had to be cut off for time.

Although they didn’t have to stay all day, some fans arrived as early as around 7:30 a.m. to make sure they could meet Smith-Pelly, who scored a critical game-tying goal in the decisive Game 5 of the Stanley Cup last Thursday.

“I wasn’t sure how the turnout would be, but it looks great,” Smith-Pelly said as the event got underway. “The fans have been through a lot, so for them to be able to celebrate a championship, it’s awesome.”

Smith-Pelly pointed out he was not even certain to make the Capitals roster when the year began.

“I wasn’t even sure if I was going to be on the team, so to be here now, you know if you would have said this would have been happening in training camp I would have called you crazy probably,” he said.
