(WJLA) - He comes from a land down under.
“At the end of the day, I’m just another hockey player,” said Nathan Walker, Capitals prospect.
Walker is the Capitals third-round pick and the first ever Australian drafted into the NHL. This week, Walker is just one of the guys at rookie camp:
“It’s been great. I’ve learned a lot and met a lot of new people.”
Walker’s hockey life started with the classic movie, "The Mighty Ducks."
“Once I saw it, I was hooked pretty much. It just stuck.”
Walker knew to get great, he had to leave Australia. So he moved by himself to the Czech Republic, and has sacrificed family time to pursue his dream.
“For him to take the route that he has, they’re going to write a book or something about it someday because he’s a guy that’s defied all the odds,” said Barry Trotz, Capitals head coach.
Walker’s Hollywood Ending? Being a "Mighty Cap."
“”I want to play in the NHL. It doesn’t happen overnight but I’m prepared…to work really hard and hopefully get the main goal which is to play for the Capitals.”
