Alexander Ovechkin named NHL's First Star of the Week
Alexander Ovechkin's huge week has not only spurred the Washington Capitals to win their last four games - it has also now garnered him the NHL's First Star of the Week honor.
Ovechkin had 7 goals and 2 assists for the Capitals in wins over Carolina, the New York Islanders, Florida and Tampa Bay over the last week, earning him the league's weekly honor. He scored two of those in a 5-3 win over Carolina on Tuesday and followed it up with a hat trick, the 12th of his career, in a 4-3 win over the Panthers on Saturday.
His two goals in Sunday's 4-2 win over Tampa Bay at the Verizon Center gave him 25 this season and pulled him into a tie for the league lead, which he now shares with Lightning forward Steven Stamkos.
Washington next takes on the Montreal Canadiens on the road on Tuesday before coming home for three home games against Carolina, Tampa Bay and Toronto. The Capitals recent winning streak has moved them two points ahead of Winnipeg into first place in the Southeast Division and third in the Eastern Conference.
St. Louis Blues goaltender Brian Elliott and New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist were named the league's second and third star of the week.
